construction__zarja_450realtor.com - New home buyers have a big appetite for larger homes, according to preliminary data recently released by the United States Census Bureau––suggesting that home sizes set a new record in 2013. 

The average size of a new home has increased more than 300 square feet in the last five years, to 2,679 square feet in 2013 from 2,362 square feet in 2009, according to the census data in a report published by the National Association of Home Builders.

Adding to the drop in averages — for the fourth consecutive week — was another study that showed a decrease in November home prices.

The two new reports have furthered the belief among some experts that the economy and housing market may be too weak to handle a large upswing in home prices in the short-term. In the long-term, mortgage rates are still expected to rise considerably in 2014.

 A pickup in consumer spending and steady home sales helped lift economic growth in October and early November in most parts of the United States, according to a Federal Reserve survey released Wednesday. The one exception was the Northeast, which was slowed by Hurricane Sandy.

Growth improved in nine of the Fed’s 12 regional banking districts, the survey said. Growth was weaker in New York, Philadelphia and Boston — areas where the storm caused widespread disruptions.

realtytimes.com - New home sales rose during the month of April. This 3.3 percent rise reported by HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau is consistent with predictions of sustained growth through the rest of the year.

On a regional basis, new-home sales rose 7.7 percent in the Northeast, 28.2 percent in the Midwest and 27.5 percent in the West in April. The South was the only region to post a decline for the month, of 10.6 percent.
