interest_alexandrgordeev_450realtor.com - The moribund mortgage market suddenly sprang back to life last week after a drop in interest rates to levels not seen in almost two years sent borrowers rushing to lock in cheaper loans.

Mortgage applications rose a seasonally adjusted 49% in the week ended Jan. 9 from the previous week and 30% from a year ago, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association. Application volume touched its highest level since August 2013, with most of the increase driven by borrowers seeking to refinance.

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose early in the week, peaking at 4.03 percent on Friday before falling to the current rate.

The average interest charged to borrowers for a 30-year, fixed rate loan fell to 4.21% from 4.29% last week, according to Freddie Mac's weekly mortgage rate report.

Rates have not been this low since the week of November 7, when they were at 4.16%.

Ikea surveyed Americans 24-54 years old who earn at least $35,000 annually and found that these areas were among the most important: living rooms, kitchen storage, energy-saving appliances, solar, more bedroom space, wired kitchen for TV and computers, and recycling.
